Krakauer put a lot of work into fact-finding. As always he is an excellent story teller. I'm glad someone told the story the government was not willing to. Unlike so many posting here I knew this story had to be political. After all, Tillman's death by fratricide was covered up and his death was used to recruit others for our never-ending wars. There is no way to tell Tillman's story without acknowledging the horrible, wasteful war that is Afghanistan and how our government can be callous enough to profit off a man's death. The government has done it before folks, it will do it again. And before the name calling starts, I am a clear-eyed veteran of 24 years. I gave the book only four stars for a reason that had more to do with me than with Krakauer's writing or the book's top. I found that I didn't like Pat Tillman very much. He almost beat a man to death and got off with a lecture and a slap on the hand. He destroyed a teammate's future in football. He admitted in his journal that joined not so much out patriotism but for some desire to self-punish or overcome a challenge. He was openly dismissive of and rude to those who joined to serve but who didn't have his privileges. He acknowledged that he was selfish in leaving his wife. In this end his own hubris that he could stand up and stop the bullets ended his life. Shouting "I'm Pat Tillman, damn it," as if that imbued him with some super power was fatal. I recommend the book as a truthful description of what military service is really like and a superior examination of failings of human beings. Many people decry Krakauer's narrative of Pat Tillman as politically slanted in this book. I disagree. Krakauer both humanizes and heroificates Pat Tillman, providing an honest, yet inspiring portrait of the man who walked away from a multimillion dollar NFL contract to serve his country. Tragically, a large part of Pat's story is the high-level cover-up that shrouded the details of his friendly fire killing as propaganda. Krakauer spares no punches against those involved, but never shifts the focus off of Tillman, as using him as a symbol of liberal dissatisfaction would be just as dehumanizing as his posthumous portrayal by the Bush administration. Readers of this book will leave with new perspective not on the war on terror, but with life as a whole. I think it's what Pat would have wanted.
